FIFA World Cup – Day 11

The second day running when the lineup of matches did not excite me as much! The three matches scheduled for the 11th day of the FIFA World cup were between Togo & Switzerland, Ukraine Vs. Saudi Arabia and Spain Vs. Tunisia. Though Ukraine is a class side and Spain too has found favour with me in the past, I wasn't too inclined to hang up till late night to catch their encounter! Did I miss anything by skipping those two matches? You bet I did !

Ukraine had suffered defeat against the spaniards in their opening game and were keen to make amends for that pedestrain performance. And for the match against the middle-eastern country, their talismanic striker, Andriy Schevchenko was back. So it was little surprise as they routed the Saudi Arabians 4-0 ,with first hald goals from Rusol & Rebrov and second half strikes from Schevchenko and Kalinichenko. The first match of the day was a drab encounter between Togo and Switzerland which the Swiss duly won 2-0.

The Spain Vs. Tunisia match also was an exciting one as the Spaniards ran their opponents ragged and thumped three goals past them. That, after Tunisia had taken the early lead through a lucky strike from Mnari in the eighth minute! A double substituition in the second half saw Raul and Cesc Fabregas coming on and that had a remarkable effect on the match as Raul scored in the 71st minute and Fernando Torres doubled the tally five minutes later. Spain sealed the 3-1 win with a stoppage-time goal via a penalty which was duly converted by Torres, who became the leading scorer of the tournament.

403 Forbidden in GMail

It was just like any other day…I had finished my work, checked and replied to a few official mails and then fired up Firefox for checking my personal mail accounts like Yahoo and GMail. And Lo and Behold! When I launched GMail from my favourites, I was staring at this message…..

What the..*&^%$!!! Does Google think that I am a filthy li'l bot that would just increase the traffic on their webservers?? This mayn't be an advertising gimmick from google since the links for virus checker and spyware remover were just Download.com's search listings and not any particular vendor-specific page! But still, I don't beleive that My PC/Bowser has been affected….I sit behind not one but two firewalls and regularly scan my machine with TrendMicro & Spybot! Then why on earth did I get that message?? I don't have the least idea!

Buggy Notepad

This piece of wierd behaviour of Microsoft's notepad was pointed out to me by Mr.Bibek, a friend of mine….

For those of you using Windows, do the following:
1.) Open an empty notepad file
2.) Type "Bush hid the facts" (without the quotes)
3.) Save it as whatever you want.
4.) Close it, and re-open it.

Is it just a really weird bug?

I did that and found to my chagrin that the text in the file was getting converted into some junky boxes! It ain't surprising to see that, considering the fact that there were other such wierd buggy stuff in other microsoft products as well. There's one in Excel (which 'may' be an easter egg!) and another about being unable to create a folder named 'con' or omething like that! A little digging led me to Wired wherein one Mr.Kevin posts in the Wired Blog about it. The Post's comments contain a link to this page which offers a kinda explanation for it! Sounded double dutch to me :(

Whatever be the explanation, if a simple app such as notepad is this 'wierd' in some cases, how will Vista be !
