[Rumour] Adlabs Hyderabad to open with Jalsa?

Many Hyderabadis would have seen the Adlabs hoardings and posters at the GS 24 Carat Building in Ameerpet (erstwhile Gold Spot building, now Big Bazaar). Having not gotten the required clearance to open up to the public yet (PVR itself has only 3 screens open to public!), the Adlabs Multiplex remained yet another pipe dream for the moviegoers in Hyderabad. But now, speculation is rife that the multiplex may open to the public with the release of Pawan Kalyan starrer Jalsa.

I was at big bazaar earlier today and there was considerable talk going around that the multiplex would be opened on the 2nd of April. Indeed, I did hear few people asking the lift-man and the guards about whether the news was true or not! The staff though, did claim they had no idea about it. And I kinda think that this was all idle-talk. Adlabs is one of the biggest media-houses in the country today and I’m sure they wouldn’t open up their multiplex without adequate publicity and hype. There would have to be posters over the city, advertisements in local media, announcements over the FM channels and all that hoopla and as long as there is nothing of that sort, we can rest assured that there still is some time for the grand opening!!! Peace.

Watched: Rangeela

The year was 1995. I was in standard 8 and not that big a movie fan. Cable tv was just finding its feet and the channels used to air a lot of promos of the forthcoming movie Rangeela by Ram Gopal Varma – starring Urmila (more famous as the lakdi ki kaathi gal) and Aamir Khan. By that time I was already a fan of Aamir, having watched most of his movies several times (even Aatank hi Aatank!) and had a high opinion about Ram Gopal Varma after Shiva, Kshana Kshanam & Raat. So off I trooped in to catch the first day first show of Rangeela (lets not mention with whom!) and I still remember those ~two hours as one of the most mesmerizing and captivating moments of my life. The rustic black-marketeer Munna, the wannabe starlet Mili, the superstar Kamal, the foot-tapping music, the seductive dances, the oomph in the songs…all of it was simply breathtakingly beautiful. And I watched it again and again in the Rukmini theatre paying 10 bucks each time. And it was my long-time favourite movie for many years to come.

The year now is 2008. On a boring Thursday evening, I saw Rangeela all over again – some scenes/songs more than once – and I was as captivated and as mesmerized as I was thirteen years ago. I laughed alongwith Munna, drooled all over Mili, sympathised with Kamal, chuckled at Steven Kapoor and his chaar-baal-aage idea and Spielberg-syndrome, swayed to the tunes of Kya Kare, Hai Rama, Tanha Tanha and Pyaar Yeh Jaane Kaisa Hae, and was ROFLMAO when Aamir shows up in his yellow costume – matching the yellow of the taxi!

Rangeela

I guess this is what movies should be like – so real and down-to-earth and at the same time, make you forget your own miseries and revel in the entertainment that they provide, albeit only for a short period of time. You immediately start to like munna - the loafer and feel sorry for munna – the lover. You admire mili who aspires to make it big one day, yet feels happy in what she does now. You feel sorry for Kamal who has everything, yet has nothing. Add to it all the sheer melody of Rahman’s songs – the racy hojaa rangeela re, yaaron sunlo zara and kya kare; the western-esque mangta hae kya; the melodious hai rama; the vivacious tanha tanha; the soul-stirring pyaar yeh jaane kaisa hae. Not until Dil Se did Rahman create such magical melodies. The climax is the highlight….when you hear that even mili likes munna, you almost are beside yourselves with glee and one can’t help but suppress a grin, when the lovers’ reunion turns into a war-of-words…again! A Masterpiece of a movie, I would say. Continue reading

Loner…

Loneliness

That’s me! My roommate of ~1 year departed for greener pastures today (am getting a déjà vu from more than a year ago!) leaving behind an un-fillable void – as yet! Sure it was known before-hand and I was all settled and prepared..but I guess one never grasps the true meaning of the moment until it arrives. One can plan well ahead and be prepared and all that…but when that moment arrives, its a whole new thing! Maybe it will take some days for all of it to sink in…as of now, I’m drowning my solitude in the soulful melodies of yesteryear.

Grand Slam Sunday – Man Utd & Chelsea Emerge Victorious

On what was dubbed as Grand Slam Sunday by the TV Channels, the top four teams in the EPL (BPL?) were in action. The top four teams – Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool – were separated by just 11 points and for each of the teams, victory was absolutely crucial. For Man Utd, to extend their lead atop the table; for Arsenal to cut short Man Utd’s lead; for Chelsea to overtake Arsenal into the second place in the standings & for Liverpool to keep their title hopes alive and kicking. The two matches in question were Man Utd Vs. Liverpool at Old Trafford and Chelsea Vs. Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

I generally catch the EPL news on the web or catch the highlights show and seldom watch a match fully  but such matches are not to be missed! So I ordered home delivery of dinner and tuned into ESPN for the back-to-back telecasts of the matches. First up was Man U Vs. Liverpool match and though it was lively in parts, it was all one-sided as Man U were the only attacking team. They went ahead through an unlikely goal from Wes Brown in the 34th minute. The match sparked up with the sending off of Mascherano for dissent and 10-man Liverpool could only haplessly watch as Christiano Ronaldo and Nani thumped in two goals within two minutes late in the second half to give Man U a 3-0 win and a six-point lead over Arsenal in the table.

Chelsea Vs. Arsenal match was later in the day and knowing Man U’s result, both teams knew that they had to win in order to reduce the gap. This one was much more lively and pacy as both teams played their tried n’ tested brand of football and created enough chances in the first half but neither could score and it remained goalless in the first half. Arsenal went ahead (again, through an unlikely scorer) via a header from defender Sagna in the 59th minute and suddenly Chelsea were on the backfoot. They upped the ante and their relentless attack paid off as Didier Drogba equalized in the 73rd minute from a Frank Lampard pass. Chelsea looked the more eager of the two teams and rung in the changes which immediately paid dividends and substitute Nicholas Anelka headed over a cross onto Drogba, whose shot sidled into the back of the net. This 2-1 victory meant Chelsea now move into 2nd place and 5 points adrift of leaders Man U.

Malaysian Grand Prix – Sunday Race – Kimi Triumphs

Kimi Triumphs in Malaysia - Image Courtesy BBC Sport/AP It was a day of Ferrari resurgence at the Sepang circuit in the Malaysian Grand Prix as the scarlet team came storming back after their disappointing showing in Australia. And the victor was Kimi Raikkonen who started from P2 behind teammate Felipe Massa and who led the race from the end of his first pitstop onwards. But it was a bittersweet victory for Ferrari as Massa spun out on lap 31 into the gravel while trailing Kimi and that put paid to a 1-2 finish that looked so likely. The McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen were penalised 5 grid places for impeding other cars in qualifying and though they tried hard to fight their way back up the grid, they had to rely on superlative pitstops and other teams’ misfortune to move up the grid. BMW had another strong race as Robert Kubica finished in 2nd place and the McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen finished 3rd. Jarno Trulli managed to hold off Hamilton towards the last laps take the 4th place. Nick Heidfeld finished 6th and also had the fastest lap of the race in the last lap! Mark Webber finished 7th and taking the final point was the Renault of Fernando Alonso.

Malaysian Grand Prix – Saturday Qualifying – Ferrari lockout Row 1

The second race of the 2008 F1 season takes place at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia and this one is going to be the first wet race of the season. It is cloudy enough on Saturday and rains are expected for the race on Sunday. Qualifying was a mixed bag of sorts with the three sessions seeing different P1 holders. In the session that mattered though – Q3 – Ferrari’s Felipe Massa put in a quick time and grabbed pole position…by 4/10ths of a second ahead of his teammate Kimi Raikkonen. So its an all-Ferrari front row at Sepang with the McLarens occupying the second row – Kovalainen out-qualifying Hamilton. Jarno Trulli was 5th with Robert Kubica and Heidfeld in 6th and 7th. Mark Webber was 8th fastest ahead of Fernando Alonso and Timo Glock.

Q1 threw up a few surprises as Kimi set the pace at the start only to see his teammate Felipe Massa go faster. Lewis Hamilton was quicker still but a small twitch near the end lost him few thousandths of a second and went second fastest at that time. Heikki Kovalainen then banged in an even quicker lap and took P1 ahead of Massa. But the surprise was yet to come…..Jarno Trulli of Toyota turned his car round the quickest and was P1 for the first qualifying session ahead of Kovalainen, Massa, Hamilton & Kimi behind him. Force India had a touch of bad luck as Fisichella was bumped out at the last possible moment by the Honda of Rubens Barrichello. Others who lost out in Q1 were Nakajima, Bourdais, Sutil, Sato & Davidson. Continue reading

Shopping in Chennai – Saravana Stores

Having finished our business errand by noon, we had some time to kill on our hands. And though Chennai isn’t a place one might call tourist-y, it does have a few interesting landmarks. I still remember my first visit (way back in 1997) when I spent almost an entire day at Mount Road’s Higginbothams. This time around, book-shopping was not at all on our list. And to see the rapidly urbanizing face of Chennai, we thought about going to either City Center or Spencer’s Plaza. Then someone else suggested Burma Bazaar and Singapore Market (Electronics & gizmos); and the movie fanatics wanted to go to Sathyam Cinemas! In the end, owing to the paucity of a private vehicle at our disposal and my apparent dislike towards auto/taxi-wallahs, we decided to hitch-hike our way to someplace nearby…..and thus ended up at T Nagar.

Saravana Stores The first thing we searched for in T Nagar was a Saravana Bhavan :P . It is arguably Chennai’s finest eatery chain and defines South Indian Food like no one else does. If Kamat rules in Bengalooru and Dhabas rule in Punjab, Saravana Bhavan lords over in Chennai. But before we could hit upon Saravana – the eatery, we chanced upon Saravana Stores – the Shoppery! There was this 7-storeyed building on the Usman (?) Road that looked so imposing (and inviting) and we promptly trooped in. And boy….was it a Shopping Mall or what!!! It had almost everything under its roof. Of Course, it can’t have everything in it but close to 90% of a common man’s needs would be available within. Housed within its seven floors were clothes, groceries, toys, stationary, cosmetics, garments, readymades, hosiery, sarees, dress materials, food items, beverages, electronic goods, sports equipment, footwear, party accessories, imitation jewellery, watches, mobile phones, cd’s, music cassettes and whatnot! And all of those at really low prices. Most of the articles were sold at a good 30-40% below their MRP. It may not be as sophisticated or fashionable as the Centrals and the Lifestyles and Shoppers’ Stops but when it comes to value-for-money, nothing comes even close. I imagined how a bunch of shopping-hungry ladies would feel once they’re left free inside this behemoth and had a faint chuckle over that thought. If they excel at the prices and the variety, their biggest letdown is the customer service, which is pathetic to say the least. None of the more-than-a-hundred-staff-members were half as cordial and helpful as those in the other malls. Questions were often met with sharp retorts in Tamil and that too in an un-interested way. But I guess since the sales are so huge in spite of that, they’re choosing to neglect that aspect.

And it was so crowded that the lift (which for some obscure reason stopped at only the odd-numbered-floors) resembled a Mumbai Local train in peak traffic. The one time we did manage to squeeze in, I noticed the insignia read ‘Max 26 Persons’ but I counted 38 heads within the lift…and that does not include the six or seven kids crammed inside it! We roamed for close to two hours within the building and everyone bought something or the other….except me. I came back empty-handed but maybe made up for it with this post :D . So if the next time you’re in Chennai and are looking to pickup some cheap stuff and also kill some time while you’re at it, you can head over to Saravana Stores.
