FIFA World Cup 2006 – Day 7

Thursday, the 15th of June was the seventh day of the FIFA World Cup 2006 and it saw three matches being played out. The First match was the Group A encounter between Ecuador and Costa Rica. Ecuador won the match 3-0, courtesy goals from Tenorio, Delgado & Ivan. This win ensures that they progress into the second round alongwith Germany, thus becoming the first two teams into the round-of-sixteen.

The Second match of teh day was the most exciting one, between England and Trinidad & Tobago. I watched the match right from kickoff and what an entertaining match it was! Trinidad & Tobago kept England at bay and never allowed them to settle down. Their marking was spot-on, esp. Lawrence's marking on the giant striker Peter Crouch. For 82 minutes England couldn't break the deadlock but in an inspired moment, Captain David Beckham hit a long-range shot onto the head of Peter Crouch, who was lurking at the far post and he towered above his marker and headed the ball into the net for a superb opening goal! This rejuvenated the England side, who also saw Wayne Rooney play for the last 15 minutes or so without any pain whatsoever! Steven Gerrard provided the icing on the cake in the 91st minute with a peach of a strike and the match ended 2-0 in favour of the English. Trinidad and Tobago, all but eleiminated from the competiotion! England joins Germany and Ecuador in the round of sixteen. They maybe joined by group-mates Sweden, who beat Paraguay 1-0 in the last match of the day. Freddie Ljungberg's 89th minute goal sealing the win for the Swedes.
