FIFA World Cup – Day 12

The twelfth day of the FIFA World Cup saw four matches being played out on a single day for the first time and what'z more, both the two pairs of matches had the same kick-off time! That meant that one can see only one match at a time…..and to catch both of them, channel surfing 👿 Not that all of the games were that exciting! The first match involved hosts Germany against Ecuador. Both of them had already qualified for the round of sixteen and hence this match was of only academic interest as to who would top the group. Obviously, Germany wanted that spot and they came out with an attacking mindset. Miroslav Klose netted in two goals to become the tournament's leading goal-scorer and podolski added another to seal a convincing 3-0 victory for the home team.In the other simultaneous match, Poland beat Costa Rica 2-0 in what was a consolation win for them. Both teams now fly home.

The real match of the day began at 00:30 HRS IST and 'twas between England and Sweden. After a long layoff, Michael Owen & Wayne Rooney were playing together and that pairing lasted just about 54 seconds as Owen left the field due to a knee injury. England took this loss in their stride and played at their attacking best. Joe Cole scored the first goal with a magnificient shot from 25 yards out which would surely be a candidate for the Goal of the Tournment! Both teams went into the break, with England leading 1-0 and looking set for sealing a win! But the Swede had other things in mind and they restored parity in the 51st minute throuh Marcus Allback, whose goal was the 2000th of all the World Cups! England leapt back into the lead through a Steven gerrard header in the 85th minute but Henrik Larsson had the last laugh as he slotted in Sweden's equaliser bang on 90 minutes! The 2-2 draw means that England top group B and will meet Ecuador next whereas Sweden will face-off with germany in the round of sixteen. The other match of Group B saw Paraguay defeat Trinidad & Tobago 2-0 but both teams will be bidding adieu.
