Holders Barcelona were ousted from the UEFA Champions League yesterday in spite of winning 1-0 against Liverpool. In the second leg of their match at Anfield, title-holders Barcelona were kept on a tight leash by the Reds’ defense and though they managed to score the lone goal at the fag end of the match, it wasn’t enough guarantee for them to progress into the Quarter Finals. Liverpool had the upper-hand, having won the first leg 2-1 and having 2 away-goals, a fact that proved decisive in the outcome. The aggregate score was 2-all but Liverpool won on the away-goals rule.
In other matches, Chelsea won their second leg match against Porto 2-1 and secured an aggregate win of 3-2. Michael Ballack struck the winner for Chelsea after Porto took the lead and Robben equalized later. AS Roma and Valencia were the other winners on the first day of the Knockout matches. The second day features Manchester United, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Milan and Real Madrid amongst lesser-favored teams like Lille, PSV & Celtic. The match to watch out for would the Bayern Vs. Real Madrid clash at Munich with the first-leg score 3-2 in favor of Real. Madrid just have to ensure a goalless draw whereas a single goal from Bayern can seal the deal for them.
