..and so do Arsenal and Real Madrid

Close on the heels of holders Barcelona, 9-time winners Real Madrid and Arsenal also hobbled out of the Champions League. Arsenal had the joy of watching an own-goal being scored by PSV’s Alex and then it turned into despair as he put the ball into the correct net the second time around to score a vital away-goal. PSV winning the match 2-1 on aggregate. As BBC put it,

It meant Arsenal’s season had gone into meltdown in the space of 10 days, after losing the Carling Cup final to Chelsea and being dumped out of the FA Cup at Blackburn!

Bayern Munich played well in their match against Real Madrid and managed to overturn a 3-2 deficit by winning 2-1 at Munich. The aggregate stood at 4-4 but Bayern progress through by virtue of their vital 2 away goals.

Manchester United and Milan were the other winners of the night. Man U having beaten Lille on the back of a Henrik Larsson goal progress through to the last 8 for the first time since 2003. Milan beat Celtic in extra time via a Kaka goal…one which saw the brazilian become the joint-top-scorer in this year’s competition with 6 goals.

The Quarter-final draw will be held this Friday to decide the match-ups. England has three teams in the last eight (Man U, Chelsea & Liverpool) while Italy have two (Milan and Roma) & Spain (Valencia), Germany (Bayern) and Netherlands (PSV) have one each in the last eight.
