Manchester United were crowned the 2006/07 English Premier League champions over the weekend as they won on Saturday and second-placed Chelsea drew their match against Arsenal on Sunday. Man Utd are now 7 points clear with only two games to play! This result brings a 9th Premiership title to the Old Trafford based club and their first since 2003. Chelsea have been the winners for the past two years and were also in the hunt this year before losing steam at the end of the season.
I had been watching Sunday’s match without an inkling of the league table and was thinking that Chelsea would win it and bring the title race into the penultimate game (incidentally, against Man Utd!) They were however down to 10 men with Boulahrouz being sent off and Arsenal scored with the resultant penalty to go one-up. Chelsea came back strongly though and Joe Cole’s goal was disallowed due to offside but the blues eventually equalised through Essien in the 70th minute. Either team would have won the match in the dying moments as Kalou spurned a wonderful chance for Chelsea – hitting the ball straight at Lehmann – and Adebayor struck the crossbar for Arsenal in stoppage time. The match ended in a 1-1 draw and thus dethroned Chelsea.
Man Utd will be besides themselves with delight but would rue the Champions League loss to Milan. However they are on course for double with an FA Cup final – against Chelsea of all teams! – in the offing. Chelsea will be looking to avenge the Premiership loss and grab at least one silverware this season and will be going all out. Must-watch match that one. Also of interest would this Thursday’s clash between Ex and newly crowned champions – Chelsea taking on Man Utd in their penultimate matches for this season.
